About Me

Welcome to my website. I’m Richard Burr, Builder/Baker. But after more than 20 years as a fourth generation builder in London, I’ve changed careers to work in my first passion – the environmental sector. I still do plenty of building and baking at home in West Sussex, am married to Sarah, and the proud dad of three lovely daughters.

I somehow found myself a finalist on 2014’s Great British Bake Off, earning a record five ‘Star Baker’ awards in the process. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish that has taught me so much and introduced me to some lifelong friends. I blogged regularly on this site, sharing some of my favourite things to bake and keeping readers posted on what I’m up to. I haven’t found the time to blog much in the past few years since my career change, but I wanted to keep this site going so people can still find my recipes.

I’m currently renovating our new home in my spare time. When I’m not building or baking I love the great outdoors: camping, fishing, hiking, cycling, gardening and walking my dog, Steve. I care deeply about conservation and completed a BSc in Biodiversity & Conservation at Birkbeck, University of London in 2012. I was half way through my MSc in Historic Building Conservation at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum when the pandemic struck, so I am working on completing this in 2023.

  1. Congratulations on the book. We finally have the GBBS over in the U.S.–Yay! You were amazing and I’m so happy you’ve continued on. I’ll be watching and waiting. Since you do such beautiful work, maybe some day you’ll post some of your other building projects. I like the way you approach things and you seem fun to learn from.
